Personal Information

Studies. I was born in Athens in 1972. I graduated the Varvakio Experimental School in 1990 and obtained my Diploma in Electrical Engineering and my PhD from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1995 and 2000, respectively.

Positions. I have joined the Department of Computer Science of the University of Ioannina in 2002. Prior to this appointment, I have also worked as a short-term professor at the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of the Technical University of Crete and the National Technical University of Athens.

R&D. I have worked for DataBlue Greece, during 1995 and 1996. I have also worked for several European and nationals projects. My web page on the projects (funded or not) I undertake is here.

Research. Untill now, my research has mainly focused on Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence technology, with particular interest on issues like Data Warehouse Metadata Repositories and Metadata Modeling, Data Warehouse Quality, On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP), and Extraction-Transformation-Loading (ETL). A major contribution to the scientific community was one of the first books on the subject: “Fundamentals of Data Warehouses” (Springer) A common thread in my work, involves investigating how the rigorous modeling of data, software and their interdependence can be exploited for the design, visualization and smooth evolution of data-intensive software ecosystems. In this context, a major line of work concerns the discovery of laws for Schema Evolution, which involves mining software repositories in order to extract the histories of schemata of relational databases and which are subsequently analyzed to identify common patterns of evolution in them. Patterns in software design and deviations from them is another line of research, from the side of software engineering. In parallel, the latest line of research on Data Analytics concerns the re-definition of data analytics in terms of (a) redefining the traditional OLAP operators with operators operating at a higher level of abstraction and (b) data storytelling, presenting richer results to users by defining a query answer to be a packaging of data, ML models, and intriguing highlights in them, along with the appropriate text and visualizations. Professional Activities. I am a board member and the Steering Committee Chair for DOLAP (2026-2029). I have served as an Editor-in-Chief for the Journal on Data Semantics, Springer. I have served as a a track co-chair for ICDE 2009 ("DW, OLAP and data grids" track) and CIKM 2009 in the "Knowledge Management"Track (responsible for the areas "Data pre- and post-Processing", "Information Filtering and Recommender Systems", "Knowledge Synthesis and Visualization"). Moreover, I have served as a PC chair for DMDW 2003, ParMa 2004 and ParMa 2006, DOLAP 2006, HDMS 2009, QDB 2010 and ADBIS 2023. I have also served as a reviewer for various journals (including VLDBJ, Information Systems, IEEE TKDE, DKE, DAPD, DSS, JODS, IST and others) and as a PC member in several conferences.

Distinctive Memberships. I am a Senior Member of the ACM, a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Distinguished Contributor of the IEEE.
