I received the Diploma in Mathematics in 1998 from the Department of Mathematics, University of Patras, Greece, with specialty in
Computational Mathematics and Informatics. I received the Ph.D. degree on Intelligent Computational Optimization in 2005 from the
Departments of Mathematics and Computer Engineering & Informatics, University of Patras, Greece. I served as Lecturer with the
Department of Mathematics, University of Patras, Greece, in 2008-2009. From September 2009, I serve as Assistant Professor with
the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Ioannina, Greece.
My research is focused on Computational Optimization and Modeling with an emphasis on intelligent computational optimization algorithms, especially metaheuristics. I am co-author of the book Particle Swarm Optimization and Intelligence: Advances and Applications, Information Science Publishing (IGI Global), 2010. I have published 26 journal papers and 68 papers in books, edited volumes and conference proceedings. My works have received more than 3000 citations from other researchers.
I have participated in several national and international research projects. Also, I have been visiting researcher at the Department of Computer Science, University of Dortmund, Germany (2001) as well as at INRIA, Sophia-Antipolis, France (2003 and 2006). In 2013, I was hosted by the Computer Algebra Research Group (CARGO) lab of Professor Ilias S. Kotsireas, Department of Physics and Computer Science, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo (ON), Canada, during my sabbatical visit.
I have served as board member in 9 international journals and committee member in more than 40 international conferences. I was track chair of the Ant Colony Optimization and Swarm Intelligence (ACO-SI) Track at the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO) in 2013 and 2014. Also, I served as external reviewer of research projects for the Wiener Wissenschafts-, Forschungs- und Technologiefonds (WWTF), Austria, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and the South Africa's National Research Foundation (NRF). I was invited as external evaluator for 2 international doctorates and as reviewer by more than 70 international journals.
I have taught more than 10 undergraduate and graduate courses, including basic mathematics and optimization-related topics. I am currently supervising 2 PhD students, and have supervised 5 MSc and 5 undergraduate theses, while I served as examination committee member for several PhD and MSc theses.
