Logic Design

The course "Logic Design" is taught in the spring semester of the 1st year of studies at the Computer Science Department. Main goal of the course is the design and implementation of digital circuits. The course consists of two parts:

  • Theory: in 14 lectures the basic disciplines of digital circuit design are presented. Every lecture is 3-hours long and includes also exercises.

  • Laboratory: in 8 laboratory exercises the student designs and implements basic digital circuits by using a breadboard devise and SSI chips of the 74LSXX series.

Course Material

 The basic course material includes chapters 1 to 7 of the book "M. Mano, Digital Design". Te following topics are covered:

  • Arithmetic Systems, Binary Codes, Logic Gates

  • Boolean Algebra, Standard Forms, ICs

  • Boolean Function Simplification, Karnaugh Maps, Do-not Care Terms

  • Combinational Circuits: Adders, Substractors, Code Generators, Parity Generator and Checker, Circuit Analysis

  • Parallel Adders/Substractors, Magnitude Comparators, Decoders, Demultiplexers, Multiplexer.

  • Flip Flops, Sequential Circuit Analysis, State Minimization, State Encoding, Do-not Care States, Counter Design.

  • Registers, Counters, Timing Sequences, Memories

 The following paragraphs do not belong to the course material: 3-9, 3-10, 3-11, 7-9.

Lab Regulations

  • Students attend the lab in groups of two.

  • Every exercise must be verified by the instructor.

  • ONLY ONE LEAVE is permitted, provided that it is fully justified. More than one leave fails the student who has to attend the whole course the next year.

  • At the end the student has to participate in lab-exams which he has to pass in order to be able to participate in the final course exams.

 

Grades

The student has to succeed in both lab and written exams. The student is eligible for the written exams only if he (she) succeeds to pass the lab exams. If the student fails the lab exams he has to participate to the next lab exams (the next academic year). Failure in the written exams enforces the student to repeat the written exam.

The final grade of the course is equal to the grade of the final written exam provided that the student has passed the lab examination.
