A team of neurologists, radiologists, medical physicists and computer scientists will collaborate under this project using clinical data, magnetic resonance imaging technology and image and signal processing algorithms in order to improve the understanding of the mechanisms underlying RLS. We anticipate this study to lead to the development of a new protocol for optimal MR neuroimaging of RLS patients and yield unique prospective information for their medical management resulting to an improved quality of their life. Methods that will be developed in this proposal could become valuable tools for clinical trials on new pharmacological agents for RLS treatment. This project could also serve as a model-case for us or others to expand clinical research to other motor/sleep disorders in the near future. Finally, it could establish further the already growing importance of functional neuroimaging in the clinical field
