Bio

I received my integrated MsC diploma from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Ioannina, Greece in 6 years. For my thesis titled "Development of a Big Spatial Data Management System", I designed and implemented a prototype distributed and parallel data management system using MPIm that answers spatial range queries on polygons. The worker nodes work indepenendently with each other while also performing their tasks parallely, using OpenMP. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina, supervised by Prof. Nikos Mamoulis.

Research Interests

My research interests include spatial data management, distributed systems and query optimization. The data is getting bigger and bigger every day, so scalability in systems is vital. When designing an algorithm for query processing, it is essential to at least consider how it would perform in large scale cloud or distributed systems. On the same note, multi-core and multithreaded processors and powerful GPUs are available at retail price, meaning that parallelization is in our hands now.
